“Hija de Guadalupe”
These pieces showcase my identity as daughter of Guadalupe Navarrete Marquez, my beautiful and smart mother. She’s an Artist, a Maker, a Giver, and a Healer. Against all odds, Guadalupe is a well-read and wise woman who flexes knowledge and loves unconditionally. I created and curated these pieces to emulate my admiration for this incredible woman. The local and found, carved and burned earthen pieces represent the place of my daughterhood: born in Mexico, raised on the Yakama Reservation. The pieces bring up power, grief, and joy. The acrylics are memories and desired memories; even those tucked away and inaccessible, and memories I haven’t yet made. And my showcase piece, “Singer,” is an ode to being able to sit before her and study the contours of her hands.“ -Yesenia Hunter
