Do this on the Day your Family Member was detained by ICE
Go to the ICE/DHS Holding facility at 3701 River Rd, Yakima, WA 98902. If possible, a documented member of the detainee’s family should be the one that goes.
If you get there before the bus leaves to transfer detainees to Tacoma, you can:
- Get the car keys so the family can take possession of the car.
- If you don’t know the location of the arrest, where the car is left behind, ask the agent what the cross streets were and they’ll tell you.
- Ask the ICE agent for the detainee’s A number.
- In case of a deportation, take a suitcase (or backpack/duffle bag) of clothing for your family member. Limit 40 pounds. It’s a lot more difficult to do this once they are in detention in Tacoma, or transferred to another facility. Sometimes they accept the suitcase, sometimes they don’t.
- Write a family member’s phone number on a slip of paper and ask the agent to give it to your detained family member.
- Bring any needed medication, medical devices, prescription glasses, and phone charger
- If needed by the family, ask the agent for your family member’s wallet or specific contents
- Ask the ICE agent if your family member is eligible for a bond (sometimes they will check, but not always)
- Contact YIRN with your family member’s A number so that we can make deposits into their phone/commissary accounts once they are processed in at the Tacoma Detention Center later that evening.
Note: you will most likely not be able to see or talk with your family member.
There is no set schedule for the departure of the bus; it depends on how many people were arrested that day and how long it takes to do the initial processing. It usually leaves by 2:00pm or late afternoon. If there have been a lot of arrests that day that start very early in the morning, they could have one bus that leaves earlier than 2:00 and one that leaves later in the afternoon.
